During the holiday season many companies that previously had temporary hiring freezes begin looking for seasonal employees. Companies that usually hire holiday workers are large retailers and some manufacturers. Atlanta job seekers who are hoping to get their foot in the door with a new company should take advantage of local holiday jobs.

Recently, Atlanta has highly publicized large job fairs in an effort to encourage job seekers to continue sending out applications. Unfortunately, many job fairs in Atlanta have created more stress and confusion for the unemployed and underemployed individuals they are designed to help. Knowing how to prepare for an Atlanta job fair, and how to present yourself during the job fair, will improve your chances of speaking to a recruiter and getting a new job.

Catch an Employer’s Eye by Applying at the Department of Labor

In October 2011 the Georgia unemployment decreased slightly, however; the unemployment rate remains at 10.2% and many Georgia job seekers are having a difficult time finding jobs. Though most job hunters are hoping to take advantage of the holiday rush by getting temporary employment at department stores, they are competing with college students coming home for holiday breaks. One way to get the attention of employers who are dealing with hundreds of application each day is to apply for positions at the Georgia Department of Labor. Why Apply Through GDOL The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) has career centers that job hunters can use to search for local job openings, and complete applications through the GDOL computer system. Once you have applied through the GDOL, the application is sent directly to the employer. Applying through the GDOL means your application will be one of the first reviewed by your potential employer. Taking advantage of the career centers increases your chances of having an employer review your application before they have finished selecting potential job candidates.

Job Growth in Ohio

Northeast Ohio has seen job growth for four full quarters in a row now, with the area’s 16 counties seeing an increase of around 40,000 jobs within the last year. Since the recession started really hitting the country in 2007, this was the first time that the job growth actually carried over into the next year in Ohio as well. Most of the job increases in the area have been attributed to the manufacturing sector. In terms of national growth, Ohio is subsequently showing a better recovery than the average. Unemployment also dropped faster than the national average, with a 2% decrease during this time period.

Georgia Unemployment Down to Under 10%

Though Georgia’s unemployment rate has recently dwindled to peek out beneath the 10% mark, it has only barely done so. Still, what this means is that the state has experienced job growth for a three-month in a row period, so things may be on the way up for sure. Job increases are largely due to the leisure and hospitality industries. In March, the Georgia unemployment rate was at 10%; today it is just beneath that mark, at 9.9%. While this margin is indeed slim, it’s the first time that Georgia’s unemployment rate was below 10% within the past two years—which is definitely something to celebrate.
